National Poetry Month
New York, November 1, 1995 --The Academy of American Poets has joined with publishers,
booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, educators, and poets across the country to
establish April as National Poetry Month, an annual celebration of poetry and its central
place in American culture. A partial list of National Poetry Month activities,
participants, and sponsors is on the following pages.
The first annual National Poetry Month will be observed in April 1996. The organizers
expect more than a thousand businesses and non-profit organizations across the United
States to participate in this project. Independent bookstores and national chains will
host readings and create special book displays; publishers and book distributors will
offer special discounts and promotional packages; libraries, universities, and literary
organizations will sponsor readings, festivals, and workshops; and teachers and
educational organizations will work to emphasize poetry as an essential part of the school
curriculum.
United States Poet Laureate Robert Hass has remarked, " 'So many uttering
tongues,' Walt Whitman said. National Poetry Month is a wonderful way to celebrate the
richness of the voices in our midst."
The Academy of American Poets will distribute information kits to bookstores and
libraries interested in participating in National Poetry Month. The kits will include
advice on how to organize readings and book displays, a resource guide to publishers and
literary organizations, listings of prize-winning books, special suggestions for
librarians, and other information on how to plan for the month. The kit will also include
a National Poetry Month poster. The Academy has also arranged for the National Council of
Teachers of English to mail special information packets to educators interested in
participating in National Poetry Month.
Booksellers and Librarians: To request an order form for the free information kit,
booksellers and librarians should send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to The Academy
