| The Academy of
American Poets was founded in 1934 to support American Poets at all stages of their
careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry. The largest organization in
the country dedicated specifically to the art of poetry, the Academy sponsors programs
nationally. These include several of the most important awards for poetry in the United
States; a poetry reading series, which began in New York City in 1963 and is now presented
across the country; and other programs that provide essential support for American poets
and poetry. To learn more about the Academy of American Poets and how to become a member, click the appropriate link: |
"What would poetry do without The Academy of
American Poets? ... It is without a doubt the most essential organization in America for
the nurturance of poetry." MONA VAN DUYN "To have great poets there must be great audiences, Whitman said, to the more or less unheeding ears of American educators. Ambitiously, hopefully, the Academy has undertaken to remedy this plight." ROBERT PENN WARREN

to foster, promote and honor the poetry and poets of this country than The Academy of
American Poets." ANTHONY HECHT |
